Mindfulness-Based Interventions in University Settings: A Systematic Review of Mental Health Outcomes

Abstract

This systematic review synthesized evidence from 67 randomized controlled trials examining the effectiveness of mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) on university students' mental health outcomes. Studies published between 2015 and 2025 were identified through comprehensive database searches. Meta-analysis revealed significant positive effects of MBIs on reducing anxiety (SMD = -0.56, 95% CI [-0.71, -0.41]), depression (SMD = -0.48, 95% CI [-0.62, -0.34]), and perceived stress (SMD = -0.52, 95% CI [-0.65, -0.39]). Improvements in well-being, sleep quality, and academic self-efficacy were also observed. Program characteristics associated with larger effects included longer duration, in-person delivery, and integration with counseling services. The review provides evidence-based recommendations for implementing MBIs in higher education institutions.
